Greg Davis > ~ Boatman on the Ganges River ~

~ Boatman on the Ganges River ~

Varanasi is to Hinduism, what Jerusalem is to Christianity and what Mecca is to Islam. It is the holy land. Hindus pilgrimage to Varanasi, India from all over the world to drink of the holy water from the Ganges River. A Hindu’s aim is not to return to the next life. By being cremated and having their ashes deposited in the river, they break the cycle of reincarnation, and in turn, send their souls to Brahman for eternity. Over sixty thousand people visit the banks of the river each morning to give praise to Lord Shiva. Public cremation is a daily occurrence along the banks and an early morning boat ride along the ghats can be eerily surreal. Out of respect for the dead, no photography is allowed while being paddled past the ceremonies, but I was able to capture my boatman from a perch on a bridge after he deposited me on the bank.
Greg Davis > ~ Reflections at Lake Pushkar ~

Watching the sunset over the lake is a must when visiting the city of Pushkar, India. Each late afternoon many arrive early along the westward-facing ghats to settle in for dusk's demise. The silhouette of the white stucco buildings surrounding the lake, shown once against the orange glow of the late afternoon sky and again in the reflection of the holy water, create a mystical ambiance that will remind you of days past and will bring thoughts of those yet to come. A charming village centered in Indian spiritualism; it is one of Hindu’s holiest. Legend holds that nectar from the gods fell to the earth to create the lake around which the city now lies. Set among the Snake Mountains in western Rajasthan, in Pushkar you can locate a yogi, a tantric master, a reflexologist, a fortuneteller, a tarot card reader, a palm reader, doctors of alternative medicines, any number of wandering sadhus, and if you look close enough, you might even find yourself.
Greg Davis > ~ This Time on the Ganges ~

I sat one afternoon on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi, India and watched life all around me struggle onward. A caring soul whisked by toting a burlap sack filled with hidden blessings. A few Dalits noticed her presence, but others too weak to raise their chins, did not. Those aware, watched intently as to her purpose. The angelic figure took a blade, punctured the bag and rice began falling to the ground around her white sari. The first few grains of rice smashed against the bottom of an empty tin bowl placed there by the first in need who was fortunate enough to recognize its contents. He was one of the lucky ones that day. That sound still resonates through my memory to this day, the simple ring of rice falling on naked tin creating mayhem, a mad rush toward the hands that were feeding them hope from a small burlap sack. “One handful, if only one; here son, take the larger bowl, I’ll take the smaller. May we be offered a handful of rice this time if you hold the larger?” And so it was…this time.
