Greg Davis > - Close Call at Kruger Park -

On an early morning game drive shortly after sunrise, we crested a hill on a dry season’s dusty road and found ourselves directly among a large herd of elephants. Forty or more animals ranging from very large, aggressive bull males to the most tender of infants were as surprised to see us as we were to see them. Amongst the dizzied herd, we abruptly halted the vehicle; elephants began scrambling all around us and seemed to be quickly growing in numbers. Trumpeting loudly to each other, one mighty blow after another, they warned their trailers that there was danger in the area. As quickly as they could amass the herd, they scurried down to the Sabie River and across the parched bottom to the opposite side. The larger males then turned to us in an about face and began flapping their ears and sounding off in defiance. Then out of nowhere from our flanks came the alpha male. He was on top of us before we knew it. He had been tailing the herd to position himself as the first line of defense to protect the herd from rear assault. Hustling by just off the back of the vehicle, he snarled, then headed to regroup with the others, ears erect, eyes fixed on us, he moved swiftly, trumpeting in strong baritone blows, and beckoning the others that waved him on with their ears from the far side. The matriarchs and adolescents shrouded the youngest in a circle of protection. One keeping a watchful eye, the others facing outwards towards the threat.

Greg Davis > - The Dancer at the Ganges River -

Fortunate in the timing of my visit to Varanasi, I arrived the week of the great Ganga Mahotsav Festival. The festival worships all that is Lord Shiva and it is celebrated right along the banks of the mighty Ganges River. There was a substantial congregation of pilgrims from all over India who had made their journeys to Varanasi for the very important religious ceremonies. I was particularly lost in the flow of a traditional Indian dancer who performed on the first evening's praise. With beautiful sounds emanating from the ornate ankle bangles that adorned her ankles, a hypnotic drum group and a single sitar accompanied her every move. She was mesmerizing, effortlessly gliding across the stage, strong in her decisions, delicate in her expression. She would stomp on every 13th beat of the drums with impeccable rhythmic strength, and then flow as the river behind her, slowly with emotion. The whine of a sitar sounds as old as time itself, could set you adrift into the darkness of the night beyond the dimly lit stage lights that illuminated the condensation in the air. The foggy veil, Mother Nature’s own addition to the expressions of the night, flowed over the performers and onto the pilgrims, creating a sense that you were sitting among the clouds, floating, observing something heavenly from above.
