The Wigman

This is a Wigman from the Enga Provice.  The pride that these warriors take in the wigs weaved from their own hair is only rivaled by the shows that the beautiful male Birds of Paradise put on when they are trying to attract a mate.  Young boys, selected by the elders because of their maturation, are invited into the village spirit house.  Elder men of the village, the chosen lot and boy’s fathers are the only ones allowed inside.  Here it stands that the adolescents shall become men.  For eighteen months the young ones learn from their elders the ways of men.  During this time, they are not allowed to cut their hair.  Once this time has passed, the boy’s manes are flowing and then cut from them.  Being told to weave the hair into immaculate wigs, only then, can they prove what they have learned.  When exiting the spirit house lair for the first time, they will be surfacing as young men, proud their world, dignity in full plume.
